Assam’s Rice Wine “Judima” Gets GI Tag: Honour with Responsibility

Apr 16, 2026

The traditional rice wine Judima, produced by the Dimasa community of Assam, has been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant milestone in the protection of India’s indigenous heritage under Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

Reacting to this achievement, Parimal Suklabaidya stated, “It is a matter of honour but we should be cautious,” highlighting both pride and the need for responsible use of this recognition.

What is Judima?

Judima is a traditional fermented rice beverage prepared by the Dimasa tribal community using:

  • Indigenous rice varieties
  • Natural herbs and plant-based starters
  • Age-old fermentation techniques

It holds deep cultural, social, and ritual significance, making it more than just a product—it is a symbol of community identity.

Importance of GI Tag under Intellectual Property Rights

The GI tag grants legal protection to Judima under Intellectual Property Rights law, ensuring that:

  • Only authorised producers from the specific geographical region can use the name “Judima”
  • The product’s authenticity and traditional method of production are preserved
  • Misuse, imitation, and unfair commercial exploitation are prevented

Unlike trademark registration, which protects individual brand names, a GI protects the collective rights of a community.

“Honour but Caution” – Why It Matters

The statement by Parimal Suklabaidya reflects an important reality. While GI recognition brings visibility and economic opportunity, it also creates challenges:

  • Risk of commercial overexploitation
  • Need for quality control and standardisation
  • Prevention of unauthorised use outside the region
  • Ensuring benefits reach the local community

Proper governance and awareness are essential to maintain the value of the GI tag.

Conclusion

The GI tag granted to Judima is a proud moment for Assam and a strong step toward safeguarding India’s traditional knowledge through Intellectual Property Rights. However, as rightly pointed out by Parimal Suklabaidya, this honour comes with responsibility.

With proper regulation, awareness, and guidance from trademark consultants and IP professionals, Judima can achieve global recognition while preserving its authenticity and cultural roots.
