Maruti Suzuki Wins ‘Transformotion’ Trademark Case: What It Means for Trademark Registration

Mar 16, 2026

A recent decision of the Delhi High Court has provided clarity in a trademark dispute between Maruti Suzuki and Volkswagen. The case involved Maruti Suzuki’s trademark “TRANSFORMOTION”, which was challenged by Volkswagen because of its existing mark “4MOTION.”

Volkswagen argued that the mark TRANSFORMOTION was similar to 4MOTION and could create confusion in the automobile market. Because of this, Volkswagen raised a trademark objection against the registration.

However, after examining the marks, the court held that the two trademarks were not confusingly similar. The Delhi High Court observed that the overall appearance, structure, and pronunciation of the marks were different. As a result, the court upheld the trademark registration granted to Maruti Suzuki.

This case shows how courts carefully analyze trademark similarity during trademark hearing and opposition proceedings. Even if two marks share a common word or element, it does not automatically mean there is infringement or confusion.

The ruling highlights the importance of proper trademark registration and legal evaluation when facing a trademark objection. During a trademark hearing, authorities and courts examine factors such as the nature of the mark, overall impression, and the industry involved before making a decision.

For businesses, this decision is a reminder that selecting a distinctive brand name and securing proper trademark registration can help protect their brand identity and avoid disputes in the future.
